About the Job

Under general supervision, performs clinical laboratory support functions including but not limited to, Accessioning and Upstream support, specimen receiving, and clerical functions.

This is a regulated position and additional information may be available from FMI Quality Assurance regarding regulatory guidelines.

Regular onsite work at a designated FMI location is an essential function of this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Specimen Acceptance:
    • Receive and record delivery of patient samples.
    • Unpack and verify contents/condition of received samples.
    • Sign off on all received specimens; ensure logs match specimens received.
    • Address any issues in the instance there are missing paperwork, discrepancies between the specimen and paperwork or if any additional paperwork is needed.
  • Reviews test requisitions and requests for accuracy and completeness prior to ordering and accessioning.
  • Verifies patient identification on specimens and requisitions by utilizing the approved patient identifiers to identify the pathology diagnosis and specimen site on the pathology report.
  • Performs general clerical support functions which include customer service functions for internal outreach such as add-on inquiries, troubleshooting problem specimens for laboratory information, specimen requirements, sorting and scanning of all test requisitions.
  • Attends to the specimen drop off, with regards to proper log keeping and accurate placement of specimens.
  • Attends mandatory annual training sessions in fire safety, chemical hygiene, and laboratory HIPAA compliance.
  • Performs all functions appropriate to position responsibilities that are required for the laboratory to meet the standards specified by accrediting agencies such as CLIA and CAP with respect to administrative procedures and policies covering specimen handling, personnel policies, safety, and quality assurance.
  • Maintains collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues to effectively contribute to the working group’s achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.
  • Performs the daily Accessioning Waste Inspection to check the trash for samples, PHI, or any other material that does not belong in the trash.
  • Provides support to the other departments such as Histology or Specimen Return as needed.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness of workstations and debulking stations.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (General Education Degree)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills that include excellent skills in written and oral communication, collaboration, and problem solving
  • Experience in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) / College of American Pathologists (CAP)-certified laboratory
  • Excellent computer/data entry skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience handling multiple tasks at once
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with peers in a fast-paced and cross-functional results-oriented team environment
  • Demonstrated experience working within tight timelines for successful execution of project and program goals
  • Demonstrated history of working well under pressure while maintaining a professional demeanor
  • Demonstrated history of prioritizing and thoroughly following up on assigned tasks
  • Demonstrated history of working in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated history of adapting to changing procedures, policies and work environment
  • Ability to perform work in a laboratory environment and in the presence of chemicals and reagents
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
