About the Job

The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) leads a team in driving towards transforming cancer care by making a deep understanding of the disease through FMI profiling indispensable to cancer care and research. By driving awareness and utilization of our unique capabilities and scientific and medical rigor throughout the oncology ecosystem - from patients suffering from cancer and the physicians treating them to biopharmaceutical companies developing new treatments and third-party payers ensuring appropriate utilization of therapies and diagnostics - the CCO helps in facilitating better-informed treatment decisions and better options for the greatest number of patients with cancer.

The CCO continues to optimize FMI’s commercial organization to be a partner of choice for our customers to ensure that the groundbreaking science that FMI has brought to scale can become indispensable to oncology care. The CCO leads the commercial team in driving greater efficiencies and continuing to be a reliable and collaborative partner for academic and community hospitals and community-based cancer centers through initiatives such as streamlined ordering, data collection and sharing, clinical trial enrollment, and advanced analytics with ease of use interpretation. The CCO also continues Foundation Medicine’s development of important relationships with C-Suite level executives at practices, oncologists, and pathologists so that we can better serve the community by providing value-added molecular information products, technology solutions, and integration services that support the pathologist’s important position as part of the patient management team. These efforts also include the expansion of our virtual tumor board services that bring together the entire clinical care team at both academic partners as well as community-based practices, to support the education and patient management of the most challenging of patient cases.

Finally, the CCO oversees a small international organization that has a close relationship with Roche’s dedicated global sales and marketing team to ensure alignment of global plans, strategy and execution. Further, the CCO supports our U.S. Education Collaboration Agreement with Genentech with the objective to drive awareness of comprehensive genomic profiling and the most appropriate uses for liquid biopsy platforms, and thereby supplementing the education provided today by our field sales team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build an experienced, fully-integrated, oncology-focused commercial organization.
  • Expand our footprint globally through our ex-U.S. commercial partnership with Roche.
  • Collaborate with oncology thought leaders, leading academic institutions, and community-based oncology networks/practices on FoundationOne Heme, FoundationOne Liquid CDx, and FoundationOne CDx clinical cases, clinical research, publications, and product development.
  • Drive broader adoption and increased ordering frequency per physician by offering differentiated programs, ongoing product innovation, new technology tools, applications, and decision support services such as FoundationCORE and SmartTrials, that provide easier access to clinically relevant information.
  • Work with patient advocacy groups and medical societies to create greater awareness of our products and the importance of incorporating molecular diagnostics into cancer treatment.
  • Facilitate broader access to care through our patient assistance and access programs, including FoundationACCESS, and our technology tools and applications.
  • Provide strategic leadership as a member of the Executive Team to inform the Strategic Planning Process and associated Long Range Plan. This includes working with cross-functional colleagues in contributing guidance on important clinical aspects of the planning process, providing input in key commercial areas, as well as guidance on overall corporate initiatives.
  • Set the strategic direction for the product portfolio in addition to meeting short-term financial goals. Identify and capitalize on opportunities for short-, mid- and long-term growth by scanning the marketplace for overall industry trends, trends in competition, biopharma and institutional partnerships, along with managed care strategy, payer/reimbursement trends, and healthcare reform.
  • As part of the portfolio development process, coordinate with R&D the project development milestones and new product concepts, with Operations to address supply and delivery issues, and overall company policy related matters.
  • Communicate long-term direction and collaborates with team on how to reach it.
  • Delegate strategic objectives to the whole team with clear and explicit intent.
  • Set up forums or practices to reinforce independent and open communication among team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Scientific, Marketing or Business Concentration
  • 10+ years of progressive marketing and sales experience
  • 5+ years of management experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree, such as an MBA, JD or PhD
  • 15+ years of US and International leadership experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or clinical diagnostics market
  • 5+ years of product launch experience
  • Experience and track record of successfully launching innovative new products across a range of therapeutic areas
  • Experience with P&L management greater than $100 million
  • Experience working in precision medicine
  • History of using complex, coordinated influencing/negotiation strategies, adapted to people, organizations and/or the situation, e.g. networks
  • Experience leading a diverse, multi-product portfolio, and scaling an organization
  • History of recruiting, motivating and retaining highly talented individuals
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Explain specifically how changes in competitors, clients, and market segments affect own business or institution
    • Translate broad corporate strategies into clear, specific objectives and plans for units and individuals
    • Create plans that address specific segments or contrasts local market with other locations or segments
    • Think 2-3 years ahead
  • Broad knowledge of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry and specific expertise in the oncology therapeutic area
  • Strong foundation in and appreciation for the science, followed by an understanding of the business application
  • Diverse therapeutic area expertise
  • Ability to identify new processes and/or systems to improve productivity and/or make the business more efficient
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, with the ability to influence and work successfully with varied audiences including investors, scientific and technical leaders, pharmaceutical and business partners, etc.
  • Extensive network of external contacts and ability to build ongoing partnerships with key stakeholders
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
