Clinical Bioinformatics Intern (Undergraduate)

About the Job

The Intern, Clinical Bioinformatics Operations supports clinical bioinformatics analysts and scientists who perform genomic data review, analysis and delivery. This position may include Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis, scripting, honing interpersonal skills and career mapping workshop in addition to individual and team projects. A key outcome of the internship is learning about journey of a sample processed at FMI from beginning to end.

The FMI Internship Program is offered to students currently registered in a degree program. It is a 10-12 week summer commitment, Full Time, 40 hours/week. Interns will gain a greater understanding of FMI through challenging project-based work, Spotlight Speaker Series with company executives, and the chance to connect with all employees by attending many company-wide events.   

This team is currently working remotely, but when working in office is based in Cambridge, MA.

Foundation Medicine is unable to consider candidates that will require visa sponsorship now, or in the future, for this specific role.

Key Responsibilities

• Learn to develop annotated genomic profiles of somatic aberrations based on massively-parallel sequencing (NGS) data in cancer-patient samples study.

• Learn to review genomic variant calls using proprietary and publicly available tools, including but not limited to the Integrative Genomics Viewer (IGV), in close collaboration with the clinical bioinformatics operations team.

• Review scientific literature for journal club, molecular tumor board, case presentation and analysis.

• Prepare, research, summarize and discuss genomic findings for select cases to build an understanding of tumor biology and precision medicine.

• Collaborate with technical teams in specifying requirements for tools to enhance workflow efficiency and robustness.

• Demonstrate commitment to quality and continuous improvement.

• Follow instructions defined in Standard Operating Procedures.

• Create a final presentation for team members on objectives attained through the internship program.

• Other projects as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

• Current sophomore or junior enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursuing Bachelor of Science degree in a biological or life science

Preferred Qualifications

• Genomics experience in academic setting

• Experience with UNIX environment

• Familiarity with SQL

• Knowledge of next generation sequencing principles and their application to precision medicine

• Knowledge of Bioinformatics tools and databases including but not limited to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) Genome Browser, and Integrative Genomics Viewer (IGV)

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Excel

• Scripting ability in Python and Perl

• Ability to multi-task and remain flexible with changing priorities Effective organizational skills and keen attention to detail

• Strong interpersonal skills that include excellent skills in written and oral communication, collaboration, and problem solving

• Highly motivated, with a strong work ethic and tenacity

• Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
