About the Job

The Principal Experience Designer is a master practitioner, innovator, thought leader, and coach that delivers innovative solutions for the most complex experience design challenges. Leveraging advanced experience the position plans and leads assigned key product and/or service design workstreams. The position acts as a holistic system thinker and is responsible for defining best practices, experience architectures, and design strategies, frameworks and systems, to ensure seamless high quality experiences and solutions, and to accelerate efficient delivery and innovation across the portfolio.

Additionally, the position is responsible for guiding the team in best practices through mentorship, coaching, demonstrating, modelling and constructive design critique. The Principal Experience Designer executes the full design process with the goal of advancing and elevating the quality, adoption, and impact of FMI’s portfolio of applications, services, and products, as well as the overall experience design practices, skills and work of other designers.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a practice lead for Experience Design, by defining best practices, mentoring other designers, leading design critiques, and facilitating design community learning and collaboration.

• Plan, lead, and manage design work on assigned product and/or service design workstreams integrated within an agile, collaborative, cross functional environment.

• Collaborate on product strategy and participate in agile release planning for selected products and services.

• Consult and collaborate with leaders in Product Management, Data Science, Development, Translational Oncology, Medical Reporting, and other applicable areas.

• Plan and facilitate Design Workshops and “Design Sprints.”

• Lead and/or facilitate the Experience Design practice guild, recurring design reviews and critiques to elevate the quality, consistency, impact, and value of design work.

• Mentor, coach and facilitate the learning and development of designers across the Experience Design group to deepen the experience design craft and professional development of team members.

• Help lead the creation of the FMI Experience Design Playbook to guide and support effective and efficient design workstreams across our teams and portfolio.

• Facilitate the definition, harvesting, and application of design insights and best practices.

• Serve as a leader of and key contributor to an FMI Design Pattern & Asset Library and Design System for both internally and externally facing product/service experiences.

• Collaborate with the technology team to grow the front-end development practice, elevate experience quality and consistency, enable reuse and seamless integration, and accelerate innovation.

• Collaborate to define and optimize experience architectures that are well aligned with technology, data, and system architectures and that enable the creation of effective, compelling, performant, and extensible product, service and application experiences.

• Partner and regularly meet with the Design team on defining high-level creative vision, aesthetic direction, and execution of FMI’s brand.

• Actively collaborate with other Experience Design sub-team leaders and colleagues to foster sharing, cross-pollination of ideas, and delivery of seamless and integrated products, services and experiences.

• Serve as a thought leader internally and externally, contributing to experience design practice advancement generally and specific to oncology health care, helping to grow the eminence and impact of Experience Design and FMI overall.

• Other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree

• 12+ years of professional experience in product and service design

• 8+ years of experience leading and managing design teams in an agile product development environment

• 5+ years of direct experience in the life science, biomedical, biopharma, and/or health care industries designing data driven applications, systems, and services

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Design, Human Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Health Informatics, Biology, a life science, or related fields

• 3+ years of experience as a design leader in life science, biomedical, biopharma, and clinical research and development contexts in oncology/genomics

• Experience:

  • as a design leader in consulting and agile system/product/service development contexts
  • working on diverse, complex, systems, and product portfolios
  • creating and driving adoption of high quality Design Systems and/or Pattern and Asset Libraries
  • designing complex data-driven applications, systems, and services in complex enterprise environments

• History of successfully leading multiple workstreams, dealing with ambiguity, and creatively adapt to fast paced work organizational environment

• Background and basic understanding of data science, oncology, genomics, health informatics, and laboratory practices

• Demonstrated systems thinking and approach in relation to experience architecture

• Outstanding teaching and mentorship skills

• Outstanding communication, facilitation, consulting, and organizational navigation skills

• Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy
