Product Owner, LIMS

About the Job

The Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) Product Owner develops and supports configuration and customization of a commercially available LIMS and Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) package which is in use facilitating the efficient processing of work and information in FMI’s R&D laboratories. This position works closely across teams to create and support technology solutions within or connected to the LIMS to improve laboratory processes and enhance laboratory tracking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory LIMS and ELN Software.
  • Interact with LIMS vendor, laboratory and informatics team members to define business requirements including automation engineering and scientists workflow requirements.
  • Ensure that quality software development best-practices are followed including:
    • Change control
    • Software verification and validation
  • Participate in the continuous process improvement of Lab Information Technology solutions.
  • Create and maintain documentation, including training materials, standard operating procedures (SOPs), test plans and test scripts, and version control.
  • Conduct system testing and User Acceptance testing.
  • Participate in and conduct regular peer design and process reviews.
  • Respond rapidly to requests from scientists and provide ad hoc support to update R&D workflows.
  • Support sample tracking and automation equipment utilization.
  • Collaborate and align with cross-functional LIMS stakeholder teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3+ years of experience in LIMS/ELN configuration, development and maintenance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Sapio, LabVantage or LabWare LIMS
  • Experience with NGS workflows
  • Experience configuring a LIMS or ELN
  • Experience with a scripting language such as Java, javascript and/or python
  • Familiarity with relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with:
    • developing formal technical specifications
    • lab information technology systems architecture and integration
  • Self-starter with a detail-oriented approach
  • Track record of successful project planning and meeting milestones
  • Team-player who thrives on working creatively in a dynamic fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, team environment
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
