About the Job

Scientist II, Molecular Biology & Sequencing is part of the Research and Development Team in FMI’s Early Research team. The primary role of this position is to explore new technologies and biomarker candidates with the focus to address unmet needs in the oncology field. The position has a responsibility for planning and execution of a variety of scientific research projects, including in vitro proof-of concept and feasibility experiments.

Regular onsite work at a designated FMI location is an essential function of this role.


Key Responsibilities

• Plan and execute proof of concept and feasibility experiments to support the development of new test in the oncology field using existing or novel methods, including NGS, microarray, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Digital PCR (dPCR)

• Evaluative new reagents and technologies, protocol modifications, and methods that may improve the sample throughput and or quality of results of existing assays.

• Execute new research projects in the multi-omics field (genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics) that support the development of new innovative assays in the oncology field.

• Oversee the workflow for massively parallel sequencing technology for the characterization of tumor genomic DNA .

• Develop and implement product lines for tumor sequencing and genomic profiling that may be applicable to both frozen and archival tumor material

• Work with in house molecular pathologists to Quality Control tumor genomic material procured from a variety of clinical contexts and methods.

• Develop and implement standard operating protocols to capture high-priority target regions of the genome prior to massively parallel sequencing.

• Work with the production team to develop scalable protocols that enable mutation profiling to be performed at high throughput.

• Monitor performance characteristics of other related methodologies.

• Monitor and evaluate new and emerging technologies related to company product lines.

• Provide regular and detailed progress reports to members of senior staff.

• Prepare and deliver presentations based on scientific and technical progress and innovations.

• Train other research team members and the other scientific staff in methods and techniques, supervising these staff members on specific projects.

• Work independently and prepare timetables, deliverables, and project schedules.

• Other duties as assigned.



Basic Qualifications

• Bachelors Degree in Biology, Molecular Biology or a closely related life science field

• 6+ years of industry experience in a molecular biology laboratory

• Alternatively, PhD in a life science field plus 3+ years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory


Preferred Qualifications

• 7+ years of industry experience in a molecular biology laboratory

• 5+ years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory

• 3+ years of experience in next generation sequencing library preparations, including hybrid capture and amplicon based targeted sequencing

• Study or experience with cancer biology, cell biology, genetics, epigenetics or molecular biology

• Familiarity with next generation sequencing technologies and principles and NGS software tools for the interpretation of NGS data

• Study or experience with cancer biology, cell biology, genetics, epigenetics or molecular biology

• Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary dynamic team environment

• Expertise in state-of-the-art technologies and biomarker trends in the field of Oncology

• Strong organizational and time-management skills including the ability to manage several projects simultaneously

• Superior verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to perform careful, detail-oriented work in a fast-past environment

• Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy
