Senior Medical Writer, Medical Affairs

About the Job

The Senior Medical Writer is a core member of the Medical Communications team within the Medical Strategy and Operations Department, responsible for generating medical content for external customers and internal medical teams. Working cross-functionally with field medical staff as part of a medical content team, the primary focus of this role is to develop high quality, easily accessible and clinically relevant information to educate external health care providers about Foundation Medicine’s products and services. This position leverages information on internal and external developments, trends in precision medicine and other dynamics to maintain a current view and perspective of the external environment. This position brings consistency across all medical communication activities and drives excellence and innovation in these areas. This position involves up to 10% travel, mostly within the US.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, write and edit scientific and clinical content with an emphasis on accuracy, structure, clarity, style, and appropriate presentation for a high-level clinical audience.
  • Gather insights from FMI’s clinical development program, publications, conference activity, field-inquiry trends, and the external precision oncology landscape to ensure medical content is up to date and meeting audience needs.
  • Collaborate across medical stakeholders (Publications, Field Medical, Med Info Contact Center) to identify relevant data and solicit functional expertise to ensure medical content is developed with a high degree of medical integrity, accuracy and clinical relevance.
  • Work with cross-functional teams (i.e. commercial, training and payer strategy) to establish mechanisms for sharing content across teams to ensure consistent messaging and communication of medical information and key messages.
  • Develop and maintain extensive knowledge of FMI’s products and services to provide high quality medical communication support.
  • Advanced literature-based research in support of content creation and scheduled updates.
  • Perform occasional medical conference coverage.
  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of content management systems.
  • Act as a medical reviewer and approver for promotional and non-promotional content.
  • Collaborate on prioritization, delegation and alignment discussions with vendors.
  • Other projects and duties as periodically assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in life sciences (genomics/genetics, biology or equivalent)
  • 4+ years of medical writing experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in Biology, Genetics, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or closely related field
  • Direct experience writing and editing clinically relevant text in the oncology space
  • Experience preparing educational content for physicians
  • Ability to accurately summarize relevant facts from clinical trial studies and other medical and scientific literature for a clinical audience under a deadline
  • Strong interpersonal skills with excellent skills in written communication, oral communication, collaboration, and problem solving
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
