Senior Software Engineer

About the Job

At FMI we use Lean Value Stream Management to build cutting edge software for external customers as well as internal teams. The primary function of the Sr. Software Engineer is to create software, processes and tools for Value Stream teams to deliver quality, compliant software more quickly. This position completes design, development, unit testing, code reviews, and technical documentation and provides technical mentoring to less senior team members. The incumbent collaborates and participates in technical design efforts, and is critical to ensuring accurate, innovative and low-defect software solutions. As a member of the Platform team, you will be building platform services, tools, utilities, libraries, CI/CD pipelines and scaffolding that abstract our cloud infrastructure and core services from our Value Stream teams making it simple and efficient for them to build and deploy their applications and services.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop software solutions needed by the business, by:

  • Studying information needs;
  • Conferring with users;
  • Studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes;
  • Investigating problem areas; and,
  • Following and implementing the software development lifecycle.

• Determine operational feasibility by completing:

  • Evaluation and analysis;
  • Problem definition;
  • Defining requirements; and,
  • Developing and proposing solutions.

• Document and demonstrate solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments, and clear code.

• Prepare and install solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.

• Improve operations by conducting systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.

• Maintain and leverage up-to-date industry knowledge by studying state-of-the-art development tools, programming techniques, and computing equipment; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations.

• Protect operations by keeping information confidential.

• Provide information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing development and service issues.

• Support and develop software engineers by providing advice, coaching, and educational opportunities.

• Mentor less experienced software engineering and development team members by answering questions and establishing best coding and engineering practices.

• Collaborate with team to brainstorm and create new products.

• Grow engineering teams by participating in interview, recruitment, and hiring processes.

• Make informed decisions quickly and take ownership of services and applications.

• Work collaboratively cross-functionally with product owners, key business and technical stakeholders, and others to achieve goals and to ensure FMI is building the best products.

• Remain persistent and creative in problem-solving.

• Act as the point person for problem-solving software-related crises and provide effective, continual support through to problem resolution.

• Develop best practices and technology standards and help drive implementation and adherence throughout the development team.

• Help define and participate in software development processes that leverages best practice and supports continuous product delivery.

• Maintain an agile and scrum environment to deliver new innovative products.

• Participate in and conduct regular peer design, code reviews, and knowledge sharing sessions.

• Provide individual hands-on developer contributions.

• Other projects as periodically assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree AND 5+ years of professional software engineering experience OR 10+ years of professional software engineering experience

• Hands-on Proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages: Java, JavaScript, Python, C#, NodeJS

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree or equivalent extensive study in software engineering, computer science, computer systems engineering, or related discipline
  • Proficient with Amazon Web Services (including but not limited to: S3, RDS, EC2, ECS, Lambda, and CloudFormation)
  • Experience with modern software components (Aurora, Redis, ElasticSearch, Kafka, AWS, ECS, Kubernetes)
  • Systems fluency (Linux, storage, networking)
  • Experience in configuration and maintenance of Linux/Unix applications such as web servers, load balancers, storage systems, databases
  • Experience writing web services delivered through JSON APIs
  • Experience managing apps in Docker at scale
  • Experience supporting 3rd party vendor applications and interfaces
  • Experience with virtualization technologies & tools such as KVM, Docker, or LXC
  • Previous experience building Dockerized apps is a plusNetworking experience, generally or specific to Docker
  • Some experience in performance optimization of high-volume, distributed web services
  • Experience with one or more of the following: NodeJS, JavaScript, SpringBoot, .net, Python or similar languages and frameworks
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, time series, noSQL and/or other database technologies[MK1] 
  • Demonstrated:
    • Passion for learning new technologies and pride in delivering working software
    • Work ethic and ability to meet project deadlines
    • Ability to work in a dynamic, collaborative team environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills that include excellent skill in collaboration and problem solving with other departments and colleagues
  • Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy and security
