Senior Software Engineer

About the Job

At FMI we use Lean Value Stream Management to build cutting edge software for external customers as well as internal teams. The primary function of the Engineering Platform team is to create software, processes, and tools for Value Stream teams to deliver quality, compliant software more quickly. The Senior Software Engineer position completes design, development, unit testing, code reviews, and technical documentation and provides technical mentoring to less senior team members. The incumbent collaborates and participates in technical design efforts, and is critical to ensuring accurate, innovative and low-defect software solutions. As a member of the Platform team, you assist with building platform services, tools, utilities, libraries, CI/CD pipelines and scaffolding that abstract our cloud infrastructure and core services from our Value Stream teams making it simple and efficient for them to build and deploy their applications and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement the platform infrastructure that allows development teams to deploy and run their services.
  • Work on critical infrastructure projects and make informed decisions that move Foundation Medicine forward.
  • Research and implement solutions across verticals like configuration, service routing, observability, and service discovery.
  • Configure systems and infrastructure as code using Terraform.
  • Design and implement automation for creation and configuration of infrastructure and services.
  • Work closely with our infosec team to address infrastructure level security concerns and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to our many existing inner-source projects, or create your own.
  • Help set the direction of what our platform will look like as we adapt to changes for years to come.
  • Drive the adoption of new technologies including containers, clustering, cloud computing, serverless, and API.
  • Work with internal development teams to ensure operational needs are being appropriately met.
  • Complete test cycles for new features.
  • Equip systems with automated monitoring and alerting.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of progressively responsible software engineering experience; OR,
  • 4+ years of software engineering experience in lieu of a degree and 5+ additional years of progressively responsible software engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree or equivalent extensive study in software engineering, computer science, computer systems engineering, or related discipline
  • Proficient with Amazon Web Services (including but not limited to: S3, RDS, EC2, ECS, Lambda, and CloudFormation)
  • Experience with modern software components (Aurora, Redis, ElasticSearch, Kafka, AWS, ECS, Kubernetes)
  • Systems fluency (Linux, storage, networking)
  • Experience in configuration and maintenance of Linux/Unix applications such as web servers, load balancers, storage systems, databases
  • Experience writing web services delivered through JSON APIs
  • Experience managing apps in Docker at scale
  • Experience supporting 3rd party vendor applications and interfaces
  • Experience with virtualization technologies & tools such as KVM, Docker, or LXC
  • Previous experience building Dockerized apps is a plusNetworking experience, generally or specific to Docker
  • Some experience in performance optimization of high-volume, distributed web services
  • Experience with one or more of the following: NodeJS, JavaScript, SpringBoot, .net, Python or similar languages and frameworks
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, time series, noSQL and/or other database technologies
  • Demonstrated:
    • Passion for learning new technologies and pride in delivering working software
    • Work ethic and ability to meet project deadlines
    • Ability to work in a dynamic, collaborative team environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills that include excellent skill in collaboration and problem solving with other departments and colleagues
  • Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy and security
