Senior Software Engineer

About the Job

The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership of a software development team at FMI. The incumbent leads by example to create a culture of software excellence and adherence to engineering best practices. The Senior Software Engineer has a high-level understanding of the codebase and leads at least one domain of FMI architecture. This role works with product management, customers, and other technical leaders to develop an engineering roadmap for the team. The incumbent makes well-reasoned decisions and trade-offs and, as an experienced practitioner, provides guidance to less experienced Software Engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & implement new functionality for FoundationInsights.
  • Work with product management to define & deliver the future of FoundationInsights.
  • Mentor and coach team members with less experience.
  • Write, test, and refactor high quality software that is full stack, cloud-native, resilient, secure, and scalable.
  • Provide leadership in:
    • Investigating design approaches.
    • Prototyping new technologies.
    • Evaluating technical feasibility.
  • Drive engineering best practices in the team.
  • Deliver contributions in an Agile approach and leveraging Agile methodology.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of professional software engineering experience OR 10+ year(s) of software engineering experience
  • Proficiency in JavaScript and at least one of Python or Java

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related concentration
  • 8+ years of prior software engineering experience
  • History of leading & mentoring less experienced software engineers
  • Deep professional expertise with:
    • Node.js runtime and associated frameworks such as Express or KOA
    • React.js and popular workflows such as Flux and Redux
  • Relational databases, including:
    • SQL
    • Database design
    • Query tuning
    • NoSQL database technologies, in particular MongoDB
    • Amazon Web Services (AWS) or similar cloud platforms
    • Containerization/containerized deployment of software: Docker, Kubernetes, and others 
  • Strong refactoring abilities and test automation skills
  • Familiarity with:
    • Data visualization
    • Typescript & ES6
    • Data analysis using Python and/or R
    • Data pipeline and workflow management tools: Airflow, Dagster, Nextflow, and others
  • Prior life science industry experience, particularly in genomics or biotechnology
  • Experience building and delivering Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) solutions
  • Demonstrated understanding of Agile software delivery
  • Strong interpersonal skills including successful collaboration and problem solving with other departments and colleagues
  • Understanding of CCPA, HITRUST, HIPAA, other regulations pertinent to data security, and the importance of patient data privacy
