Sr Computational Biologist

Full Time | Cambridge | Massachusetts | United States


The Senior Computational Biologist is part of the Research and Early Development team in FMI’s Product Development group.  The key responsibilities of this role are to provide computational, bioinformatic, and statistical support for research and early development projects.  This role will work collaboratively on the design and execution of novel computational analysis to implement tools for efficient and robust analysis of multiparametric biomarker data (e.g. genomic, epigenomic and transcriptomics).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop advanced computational methods to enhance research and discovery of multiparametric biomarkers obtained from genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic and proteomic platforms.
  • Perform thorough analyses of multiparametric next generation sequencing (NGS) data to address key statistical questions, data quality and to understand outliers.
  • Collaborate with team members in specifying requirements for tools to enhance biomarker discovery.
  • Provide support in exploratory biomarker hypothesis testing and generation according to research scope.
  • Assist with drafting and completing manuscripts for publication.
  • Manage data analysis, interpretation of research and early development study results throughout manuscript publication process from draft through submission and acceptance.
  • Organize and present results at team and cross-functional meetings.
  • Other related duties as assigned.



Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a life science, mathematics or technology field of study related to FMI’s work.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Computational Biologist.
  • Working knowledge of C++, R/Bioconductor, Java, and Python.
  • Experience in the analysis of next-generation sequencing and microarray data.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a life science, mathematics or technology field of study related to FMI’s work.
  • Life sciences industry experience in genomics, molecular insights, and/or diagnostics.
  • Study or experience with cancer biology, cell biology, genetics, epigenetics or molecular biology, in particular experience working with large biological data sets to address focused biological questions in the oncology field.
  • Sound knowledge of current bioinformatics trends, available genomic and epigenetic bioinformatic tools and databases.
  • Experience developing algorithms for analysis of large data sets, including prior experience with genomic and bisulfite NGS data.
  • Solid understanding of (epi)genetic and biochemical pathways.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary dynamic team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data.
  • Willingness to learn and understand complexity of industry and business.
  • Ability to adapt to changing procedures, policies and work environment.
  • Track record of demonstrated integrity.
