About the Job

The Senior Director, Corporate Strategy & Corporate Development is responsible for setting the vision and leading a team that defines and shapes FMI’s corporate strategy and corporate development approach. This leadership-level role charts the long-term direction of the company, identifies opportunities for organic and inorganic growth, and evaluates strategic and business partnerships as they pertain to realizing our company’s mission and long-term aspirations. This role works closely across many cross-functional stakeholders and the Executive Team and reports directly to the Head of Global Portfolio Strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organizational and Team Leadership:
    • Provide inspirational and strategic leadership to a team of individuals to shape the corporate strategy and corporate development approach for Foundation Medicine.
    • Serve as a member of the Global Portfolio Strategy (GPS) Leadership Team to lead and participate in strategy development, decision making, and culture shaping in GPS.
    • Serve as a member of the FMI Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and partner closely on cross-functional alignment and integration.
    • Partner effectively with the Executive Team and key internal stakeholders within the organization to influence and drive change.
    • Provide effective management, coaching, and development of direct reports.
  • Corporate Strategy:
    • Collaborate closely with the Executive Team to inform the strategic direction of the company and partner across the organization to carry out our corporate strategy globally by providing strategic thought leadership and analytical rigor for important business decisions.
    • Lead and oversee key enterprise-wide projects and initiatives that advance the strategic direction of the company.
    • Align organizational efforts towards our corporate strategy and oversee the process to monitor ongoing performance of corporate priorities.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders across Portfolio Planning, Finance, Strategic Insights & Analytics, Chiefs of Staff, and Communications, to define and execute on the annual strategic enterprise business planning process.
    • Keep apprised of industry trends and evaluate the potential impact of industry events on the company’s strategy.
  • Corporate Development:
    • Together with cross-functional leaders, evaluate and execute on new business opportunities that align with FMI’s corporate strategy; oversee each opportunity through close collaboration with internal and external parties.
    • Evaluate business opportunities from external sources and develop business cases for considering go/no-go decisions and valuations.
    • Develop, lead, and implement workstreams for external opportunities that include strategic partnerships, joint ventures, in licensing and out licensing, and acquisitions.
    • Partner closely with finance and legal teams on the end-to-end transaction process (deal concept to signing), by directing and/or executing partner outreach and development initiatives, conducting financial analysis and due diligence, structuring and negotiating transactions, negotiating to agreement, and planning integrations.
    • Develop negotiation strategies; directly negotiate agreements on behalf of Foundation Medicine as required and serve as key point of contact for joint development agreements and collaborations with Foundation Medicine, acting as the “voice of Foundation Medicine” for all group negotiations.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 12+ years of relevant progressive corporate strategy and development work experience (including within industry, private equity, investment banking, and/or consulting fields)
  • 5+ years of experience managing direct reports and leading teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, such as an M.S. or Ph.D. in a biological discipline and/or an MBA/equivalent advanced business degree
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate degree work in a mathematical, life science, or business field
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible work experience within the healthcare and/or life science industry with work on therapeutic or diagnostic development and commercialization
  • Experience in complex business environments within a variety of different industries
  • Demonstrated experience in financial modeling, forecasting, analysis, and financial reporting
  • Previous experience in deal negotiations with both the C Suite of target companies as well as bankers and finance professionals
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, particularly for executive audiences
  • Strong skills in quantitative analysis, strategy and project management
  • Comfort with ambiguity and proven decision-making capabilities with minimal information
  • Passion for technology and its implications for creating a better world
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
