The Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer oversees FMI’s Business Ethics and Compliance Program. This position is responsible for maintaining a robust and effective global compliance function at the Company and for elevating, driving and ensuring full implementation of a compliance program that meets all current regulatory expectations, including the seven elements of an effective compliance program, as set forth by the United States Department of Justice. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain overall responsibility for the design, implementation, maintenance and effectiveness of FMI’s Business Ethics and Compliance Program across the company. Provide leadership, direction, and integration of compliance activities to fulfill applicable global statutory and regulatory requirements in a manner that meets regulatory expectations, including the seven elements of an effective compliance program set forth by the United States Department of Justice.
  • Promote a culture of business ethics and compliance by fostering an environment of open and honest communication with all employees of all levels – reinforcing the importance of conducting oneself in an ethical manner and in the best interests of the company.
  • Coordinate and closely collaborate with all functions at FMI to facilitate achievement of FMI’s business goals in a sustainable way and position FMI’s Business Ethics and Compliance Program as a competitive advantage.
  • Act as a key leader responsible for managing risks and safeguarding the reputation of FMI.
  • Lead the Compliance Committee.
  • Lead and develop a high performing compliance team that is execution-focused and disciplined in approach.
  • Be responsible for all healthcare and corporate legal and ethics compliance policies, including drafting, revising/updating, and implementing. 
  • Support the FMI Privacy Program and FMI Privacy Officer in designing, implementing and maintaining an effective privacy program.  Be responsible for operationalizing FMI’s Privacy Program, through effective training, auditing, and monitoring and other traditional compliance program activities.
  • Develop and drive the implementation of a proactive, strategic and modern training program throughout the organization aimed at impacting behavior and driving ownership of business ethics and compliance by all FMI employees.
  • Oversee periodic enterprise risk management evaluations intended to identify, assess, monitor and mitigate risks that may affect FMI, so they are managed within acceptable risk tolerance levels.  Identify major areas of concern to the organization from a risk mitigation perspective and recommend appropriate changes to address.
  • Coordinate all compliance measurement efforts, including the establishment and conducting of routine and focused internal and external audits of policy and procedure adherence.
  • Lead internal investigations of suspected violations of applicable laws, regulations or policies to conclusion, or support investigations conducted under privilege by the Legal team, and management of the internal FMI hotline.
  • Recommend corrective action, including disciplinary action, as appropriate and develop appropriate policies regarding discipline for business ethics and compliance violations across FMI.
  • Work in strong partnership and collaboration with other Roche compliance officers to share best practices, leverage learnings and create an effective compliance program within the larger Roche enterprise.
  • Serve as a technical resource for business and other functions regarding compliance and/or regulatory matters.
  • Evaluate the company’s products, services and operations for compliance and ethics issues.
  • Mange accountability for all company healthcare compliance government disclosures, including submission of any required transparency reporting.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of, and keep abreast of developments in, healthcare laws and regulations in the US.
  • Work in collaboration with legal team colleagues to interpret new laws and regulations and develop a strategy to adhere to the requirements of such laws and regulations within the required regulatory timeframe.
  • Drive operational efficiencies by setting measurable goals and work on leveraging and deploying new and existing technologies to improve efficiencies in FMI’s Business Ethics and Compliance Program across the organization.
  • Prepare materials and make presentations to FMI senior leadership and board members, as requested.
  • Assist the General Counsel in ensuring alignment of Compliance team and Legal team advice and consistency of counsel across FMI.
  • Hold membership on the Leadership team of the Legal and Compliance function at FMI, assisting the General Counsel and other Legal team leaders in formulating departmental structure, vision and goals, including career development and retention planning for Legal and Compliance team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10+ years of direct compliance experience in a compliance department of a healthcare company (Diagnostics, Medical Device, Pharma/Biotech)
  • 5+ years of experience successfully managing and developing people on a successful compliance team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience successfully building and leading a compliance function that embeds compliance as a competitive advantage and strategic business enabler of long-term growth
  • Specific prior experience in the development/deployment of a company-wide compliance program, including: policy setting and development, compliance operations, risk-assessment and mitigation, training & awareness, auditing and monitoring, investigations, discipline, communications and compliance culture/leadership
  • Proven track record of successfully innovating in compliance, embedding compliance as a key business differentiator and competitive advantage in all aspects of the business
  • Specific experience presenting to and working directly with company C-suite members
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain open and trusting work relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-faceted projects in a fast-moving environment
  • Ability to effectively project the stature and importance of the compliance function across the organization
  • Sophisticated ability to apply a risk-based analysis to compliance issues and demonstrate creativity and flexibility in developing solutions that satisfy both business requirements and legal obligations
  • Strong attention to detail, with a pragmatic, practical, decisive and direct approach
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Excellent collaboration and influencing skills
  • Superior judgment and rigor in relation to problem solving and appropriate escalation of issues
  • Willingness and ability to deliver a consistent message in the face of adversity
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
