About the Job

The Vice President, Government Affairs is a member of the Government Affairs team within the Corporate Affairs department. The position is a highly cross-functional leadership role that leads the company’s engagement with the United States government. The position is responsible for identifying policy priorities, developing issue advocacy strategies, and shaping the public policy landscape to advance the value of high-quality diagnostic tests. The position manages the Government Affairs team, including Public Policy and State Government Affairs, and reports directly to the Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs. The position is also a member of the Corporate Affairs Leadership Team and FMI’s Senior Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior strategist and federally-registered lobbyist, in partnership with the Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, to represent FMI before the United States Congress, the Administration, and the White House.
  • Work cross-functionally to identify FMI’s Government Affairs priorities and develop strategies to advance FMI’s legislative, regulatory, and political agenda in the United States.
  • Maintain and expand FMI’s relationships with government officials and staff, industry partners, and advocacy organizations and preserve FMI’s reputation as a credible and trusted resource.
  • Identify opportunities with external stakeholders to elevate FMI’s profile and support FMI’s policy priorities, including but not limited to trade associations, advocacy organizations, and other thought leaders.
  • Advise internal stakeholders, including executive leaders, on political and public policy strategy with respect to issues such as product regulation, market access, data privacy and security, and corporate reputation.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and relevant internal communications regarding current and emerging public policy issues, including an analysis of the associated business impact and a recommended corporate position.
  • Draft memorandums, educational collateral, briefing materials, and presentations detailing the impact of federal legislation and improving awareness among key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead efforts to prepare FMI executives to testify before the United States Congress.
  • Manage, support, and mentor the Government Affairs team, providing the team with professional development opportunities.
  • Manage the Government Affairs budget, consulting contracts, and related corporate memberships.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 15+ years of experience within public policy, government affairs, or related industry
  • Proficient understanding of federal legislative and regulatory processes
  • Strong, pre-existing network of relationships, particularly with federal government stakeholders
  • Experience working with relevant U.S. Congressional committees (such as the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions; U.S. Senate Committee on Finance; U.S. House Committee on Energy & Commerce; and U.S. House Committee on Ways & Means)
  • Proven track record of leading government affairs efforts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor Degree and/or Graduate-level education in Public Policy, Political Science, Business, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience within oncology, healthcare, diagnostics, biotechnology or similar industry
  • Successful history of engaging political and regulatory stakeholders to advance policy priorities
  • Stellar reputation validated by external stakeholders
  • Previous management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate internally as a well-respected and valued business partner
  • Outstanding verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Extensive leadership experience and strong executive presence
  • Strong ability to communicate complex policy issues to a broad spectrum of stakeholders in a compelling, accurate, and concise manner
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Adept negotiation skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, with little or no supervision and exercise good judgement
  • In-depth understanding of current health care policy issues, such as the regulation of laboratory developed tests, companion diagnostics, patients’ access to biomarker testing, the coverage and reimbursement of tests using next generation sequencing technology, and the privacy and security of sensitive health information
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data
