The Foundation Medicine laboratory in Research Triangle Park (RTP) was established in April 2016 and has rapidly grown into a key laboratory hub for the company. The RTP lab collaborates very closely with lab headquarters in Cambridge, MA, and other Foundation Medicine sites in the US and Penzberg, Germany.

In addition to Lab Operations, the Foundation Medicine team in RTP consists of several groups, such as Pathology, Client Services, HR, Communications, Quality Assurance, Automation Engineering, Facilities, Supply Chain, Environmental Health & Safety, Laboratory Information Management Systems, Product Care, Technology Transfer, project management, and information Technology. The team has grown to over 150 employees since its inception in 2016 and continues to expand in size.

With nearly 50,000 square feet of space, the office was recently renovated and is surrounded by 20 miles of beautiful walking trails, 3 of which directly surround the RTP office. The office is situated in the heart of RTP, which is home to numerous research organizations as well as biotech and technology companies.

RTP is a region in the Piedmont of North Carolina, anchored by three major research universities: North Carolina State University, Duke University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as the cities of Raleigh and Durham and the town of Chapel Hill. This tri-city region (also known as the Triangle) lures new residents every day with its strong job growth, affordable cost of living and high quality of life.

RTP Histology: What Changes and What Stays the Same

"It’s an extremely exciting time to be working at Foundation Medicine. The expansive growth of the RTP site in terms of both space and sample volume are a few of the major developments happening right now. With the dynamic mindset already ingrained in our culture, these new developments only add onto our important work and drive our passion. I’m looking forward to seeing all the amazing things we will accomplish."

Pathology Projects and Connections That Matter

"As Associate Project Manager, I oversee many ongoing projects, as well as assist with project mentoring. Some of the projects I love working on are connected to our immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing portfolio. I’ve learned so much about the end-to-end processing and the overall product from the talented members of the Pathology team and other key stakeholders involved. I’m most proud of helping launch four new IHC assays and watching the overall portfolio of testing products expand."
