Behind The Scenes: Promotional Review

Brina, Senior Project Manager, Legal

December is an apt time for reflection, as many of us choose to look back on the past year and ahead to what lies next. As 2022 draws to a close, it has me reflecting on the impressive year shared with colleagues here at Foundation Medicine. As a senior project manager, overseeing our Promotional Review Committee, I see a broad range of projects pass through my hands – or rather through our online review system – and out into the world to share our mission and science.

Promotional Review Committee (PRC) at Foundation Medicine is composed of my colleagues from the compliance, regulatory, legal, and medical teams. The people who make up this committee are folks that I work with day in and day out. On any given day, we review a huge variety of projects and items that are essential to our business. This includes anything from a presentation, to sales email templates, to kit packaging, and our social media posts about products. Through our work, we get to see all corners of the company, a unique opportunity to see both a broad and detailed view of what is going on at Foundation Medicine. With so many moving pieces, we want to make sure that everything we see is given appropriate attention to ensure we are creating content that is accurate, compliant and resonates with our audiences.

While sitting on Promotional Review Committee might offer a broad and varied view of all that is going on at Foundation Medicine, it is also a chance to see each detailed piece that goes into making what we do a success. One of the coolest parts of my job is seeing the many components of one project come together to form a whole. For example, when we launch a new product, PRC sees the related sales content, presentations, social media posts, and more.

With a steady workflow of promotional materials needing review, there is never a dull day on PRC.  With each project, it is my job to work across teams with material owners and submitters to ensure timelines are met and comments from PRC are addressed. While we try to adhere to a standard approach for review, each piece is different and may include additional steps prior to approval. Connecting all the dots and ensuring that everyone is aligned on a piece of material can present its challenges, but it is rewarding to see the final, polished product at the end of it all.

At the heart of everything that comes through PRC are our patients – and that shines through in the many impassioned conversations shared in review meetings each week. As we sift through the important pieces of different launches and items, and with all the back and forth that the review process brings, we are always keeping our patients in mind and how the final piece will impact them.

What stands out most as I reflect on the key milestones we have reached together in 2022 is the passion that weaves its way through every single project. In our careers, it’s really easy to get caught up in the day to day, but I think when you take a step back, and look at what drives us forward, it’s all about who we serve and our passion for our patients. I am grateful to serve in my role here at Foundation Medicine and to get to work hands-on with so many impactful projects, and I look forward to what lies ahead in 2023.
