Growing Beyond Your Role: How ENRICH Fosters Learning Across Teams

At Foundation Medicine, growth isn't limited to a job title. Some of the most meaningful learning happens when people have the opportunity to step outside their day-to-day responsibilities, collaborate with colleagues across the organization, and gain a deeper understanding of how our work comes together to inform treatment decisions.

That's exactly the purpose of ENRICH.

Launched in 2022, ENRICH is a rotational program designed to build skills across departments while strengthening communication, collaboration, and innovation throughout our Global Operations team. What began as a small initiative has grown to over 50 participants, creating opportunities for employees to explore new areas of the business.

Learning Through Experience

Unlike traditional training programs, ENRICH provides hands-on learning through real projects. Participants spend 12 weeks working with a host team on a structured assignment that allows them to develop new skills, expand their perspective, and build relationships with colleagues they might not otherwise have the opportunity to work alongside.

Each rotation begins with a collaborative planning process. Participants and hosts create a charter outlining project goals, timelines, and expected outcomes, ensuring the experience is meaningful for both the individual and the team. Throughout the rotation, employees balance their regular responsibilities while immersing themselves in a new area of the organization.

The result is more than a completed project. Participants gain a broader understanding of Foundation Medicine's operations and discover how different teams contribute to our shared mission.

Building Bridges Across Teams

One of ENRICH's defining goals is building stronger connections across departments. While participants gain valuable skills through their rotations, the program was intentionally designed to foster collaboration and strengthen communication throughout our Global Operations team. Employees are encouraged to share what they've learned, helping teams better understand one another's challenges, processes, and expertise. That knowledge-sharing comes full circle at the end of each rotation, when participants present their learnings to the broader Global Operations team, extending the impact of their experience beyond their host department.

That spirit of knowledge-sharing reflects a value deeply embedded in our culture. The work we do is complex, and the best solutions often come from combining different perspectives and experiences. By creating opportunities for employees to learn from one another, ENRICH helps build stronger partnerships throughout the organization.

Courage to Explore Something New

Stepping into an unfamiliar area can be intimidating. It takes courage to ask questions, learn new processes, and contribute to a team outside your usual function.

ENRICH encourages employees to do exactly that.

Participants have the chance to challenge themselves, expand their skill sets, and explore areas of interest they may never have considered before. In some cases, employees have even discovered new career paths through their rotation experiences. While career transitions are not the primary goal of the program, the exposure can help individuals better understand their strengths and future aspirations.

Powered by Passion and Purpose

While participants are often the face of ENRICH, a committed team of Global Operations employees serve as the engine behind the program. These individuals contribute their time, energy, and expertise because they believe that learning, collaboration, and shared growth make Foundation Medicine stronger. The committee has representatives from our Boston, Research Triangle Park, and Penzberg sites including Jeffrey Foster, Senior Molecular Technologist, Brandon Burgess, Sr Laboratory Technologist, Mais Zahde, IHC Supervisor, Coertney Scoggin, Clinical Bioinformatics Analyst I, Kiara Pitt, Clinical Bioinformatics Analyst I, Pokabell Blazevic, Specialist, Right To Operate, Lordina Innocent-Belony, Strategic Operations Lead, Amanda Gottberg-Williams, RTP Histology Supervisor.  They are supported by leadership sponsors including Selmira Beckstrom, Dir, Laboratory Operations & Product Implementation and Dionne Wells, VP, Client Services and Site Head, RTP.

The success of ENRICH also depends on the enthusiasm of both participants and hosts. Employees volunteer to share their expertise, mentor colleagues, and develop projects that create meaningful impact. Participants bring curiosity and a willingness to learn, while host teams invest time and energy into helping others grow.
That shared commitment reflects the passion that drives Foundation Medicine. Our people are continuously looking for ways to improve, innovate, and support one another because they understand the importance of the work that we do and the patients we ultimately serve.

A Culture of Continuous Growth

Programs like ENRICH are a reminder that career development is not always about moving up. Sometimes it's about moving across, learning something new, and gaining a broader perspective that makes us stronger employees, teammates, and problem-solvers.

ENRICH also reflects a core Global Operations operating principle, Deliver Excellence, by encouraging employees to set clear goals, broaden their understanding of the business, and contribute meaningful results that benefit both their host teams and the broader organization.

While this experience is a Global Operations-targeted program, employees across Foundation Medicine have access to a variety of rotational and development opportunities to deepen their knowledge, build new connections, and contribute in ways they never expected.
