Location Spotlight: San Diego

Located in Torrey Pines, the center of the San Diego’s life science cluster, Foundation Medicine’s California site is brimming with energy as it settles into its new space and gears up for continued growth.

In 2019, Foundation Medicine opened a facility in San Diego with the goal of expanding its Research and Development operations and overall testing capacity. The subsequent acquisition of Lexent Bio, Inc., a precision oncology company located in California, stimulated rapid growth. The site increased its headcount through the integration of an experienced team of clinicians, scientists and engineers with expertise in onco-multi-omics, which provides new capabilities to detect cancer and understand tumor biology in greater detail.

Since its inception, the San Diego site has grown to a cross-functional team of over 55, which consists primarily of R&D, Lab Operations, and Facilities professionals. The clinical Lab Operations team continues to grow, seeking out candidates with expertise in accessioning, licensed molecular and clinical lab scientists, laboratory management, laboratory quality systems, laboratory automation, process excellence, and medical.

Foundation Medicine’s new facility in Torrey Pines, which became occupied in Fall 2021, consolidates the company’s two previous California locations under one roof and includes more than 80,000 square feet of mixed-use space optimized for both Laboratory Operations and Research and Development. The site consists of both office and wet laboratory space that serve Foundation Medicine’s commercial and biopharma operations. The laboratory in San Diego was designed to support FoundationOne®Liquid CDx, Foundation Medicine’s FDA-approved blood-based comprehensive genomic profiling test, and the team is preparing to support the validation of its launch at the site. They look forward to leveraging this new state-of-the-art facility to accelerate Research and Development and expand Foundation Medicine’s existing liquid biopsy platforms to continue to transform cancer care for patients.

As the team continues to settle into their new environment, there continues to be cause for celebration. San Diego site lead Steven, Senior Director, Laboratory Operations, was recently chosen as a finalist for San Diego’s Next Top 40 Business Leaders Under 40 by the San Diego Business Journal. In early August, he will host the site’s official ribbon cutting for the new building in Torrey Pines. Steven and the team look forward to welcoming CEO Dr. Brian Alexander, and Chief Scientific Officer, Priti Hegde, to offer remarks, tour the new facilities, and celebrate this exciting milestone for Foundation Medicine.
