About the Job

The Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Supervisor supports oversight of the IHC team on the bench, keeping task and turn-around time (TAT) a priority, and has broad exposure and expertise in immunohistochemistry assays using a variety of automated platforms. 

This is a regulated position and additional information may be available from QA on the qualifications for this role pertaining to regulatory guidelines.

Regular onsite work at a designated FMI location is an essential function of this role. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform Automated Immunohistochemistry (IHC) using both the Dako Autostainer Link 48 and Ventana Benchmark Ultra Staining Systems.
  • Flex to cover scheduling gaps and participate on the on-call rotation for additional weekend and/or holiday technical support.
  • Collaborate with other team leads, supervisors and managers in assigning work, developing rotational schedules and assigning team duties.
  • Supervise day-to-day activities and workflow of the clinical immunohistochemistry laboratory and performs daily activities in the lab as needed.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of laboratory processes to ensure effective troubleshooting of assays and instrumentation; provide troubleshooting as needed.
  • Ensure team members have the necessary training and understanding to effectively carry out their duties.
  • Assist in the development of competency, training and orientation of immunohistochemistry staff.
  • Serve as a technical resource for problem solving and process improvement to ensure accurate test performance and meeting all quality goals.
  • Support the collection, maintenance, and evaluation of monthly metrics and inventory.
  • Supervise timely maintenance of equipment and other technical resources.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and others as needed to resolve issues and maintain ongoing functionality.
  • Document service, project management and repair work.
  • Review and approve timecards.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams to coordinate troubleshooting, process improvements, and/or implement new workflows or products.
  • Evaluate, implement and perform new methodology and antibody staining techniques
  • Manage staffing in the lab, performance evaluations for direct reports, recruitment of new hires and corrective action as needed.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in a biological or life science
  • 6+ years of histopathology professional experience in a College of American Pathologists or Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CAP/CLIA) certified laboratory
  • 3+ years managing a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASCP Certified in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC), or certification-eligible
  • 4+ years of automated Immunohistochemistry experience
  • 3+ years of experience creating laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with instrument validating and optimization, and with IHC validation and optimization
  • Experience working with Automated Immunohistochemistry (IHC) to include both the Dako Autostainer Link 48 by Agilent Technologies and the Ventana Benchmark Ultra Staining System by Roche
  • Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a professional demeanor
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and thoroughly follow up on assigned tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks at once and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain flexibility in hours so as to periodically cover scheduling gaps
  • Strong interpersonal skills that include excellent written and oral communication skills, and strong problem solving skills across functional teams
  • Demonstrated history of successfully managing multiple concurrent initiatives and maintaining one’s own workflow while also meeting project deadlines

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Morrisville, NC is $95,200 - $112,100 per year. The salary range is commensurate with Foundation Medicine’s compensation practice and considers factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, external market conditions, criticality of role, and internal equity. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for Foundation Medicine's benefits.
