Network Engineer III

About the Job

The Network Engineer III helps design, implement, and maintain the enterprise network across all FMI locations and colocations, ensuring the network is reliable, efficient, and secure. On a daily basis, this role collaborates within the networking team, with other IT teams such as Systems, Cloud and Security, as well as FMI’s Facilities and external vendors to troubleshoot and solve problems and participate in various network-related projects from small upgrades to large-scale implementations. Moreover, the Network Engineer III is responsible for creating and maintaining accurate network documentation including diagrams, configurations and procedures and staying up to date on the latest network technologies, including security threats and best practices. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for daily operations of LAN, WAN, and traffic engineering for Foundation Medicine Offices/Labs and Colocation datacenters.
  • Create documentation for infrastructure, processes, and procedures.
  • Monitor the ticket queue and ensuring availability of network services.
  • Patch for moves, adds, changes, and new spaces.
  • Maintain network security, Palo Alto Firewalls, and VPN.
  • Deploy, maintain, troubleshoot wireless networks.
  • Lead Projects, such as switch upgrade, network integrations with third parties, and Network hardening. 
  • Document work and share knowledge with the rest of the team internally and externally.
  • Act as an escalation point/ mentor for junior members of the Network team. 
  • Assist other technical groups to help deliver business critical projects.
  • Participate in 24x7x365 on-call rotation.
  • Occasional travel within North America.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer networking, Management Information Systems or a related field with 5+ years of experience as a Network Engineer; OR
  • 9+ years of experience in a network support function with 5 years of experience as a network engineer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years related experience in the implementation, management and maintenance of information technology infrastructure and IT systems including cloud architectures, business systems, server technologies, and communication technologies, LANs, WANs, telephone, voice, video and data communication systems
  • Certification and skills:
    • CCNP Routing and Switching and/or CCNP Datacenter a plus
    • CNSE certification a plus
    • ITIL certification a plus
  • Experience with:
    • In-depth knowledge of routing protocols (BGP, and OSPF with BFD)
    • Working with Cisco Catalyst chassis series switches (9400) and Cisco Nexus platforms 
    • Strong background in network security, encompassing Access Control Lists (ACLs), Palo Alto firewalls, IEEE 802.1X authentication, and dynamic VLAN configurations
    • Proficient in wireless networking technologies, with a focus on enterprise-grade wireless infrastructure and performance optimization
    • High-performance telecommunications networks (ENS and Point-to-Point)
    • Proficiency in networking within Amazon Web Services (Transit Gateways, Route53, Direct Connects, VPC, CloudWAN)
    • Network diagnostic, monitoring and analysis tools (e.g. LogicMonitor, Wireshark)
    • Network Automation tools, Terraform, Ansible, Python
    • Netbrain Maps
    • Traffic Engineering and Shaping with QoS
    • VoIP Networks
  • Demonstrated experience with project management
  • Experience working in a regulated environment (SOX, HIPAA, CLIA, FDA and CAPA)
  • Working knowledge of the OSI model and basic networking technologies, as well as demonstrated experience and thorough understanding of network design, planning and implementation, security principles and general network management best practices
  • Demonstrated understanding of a clinical lab environment 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concerns to non-technical individuals
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize, and adapt with change 
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Remote is $107,400 - $145,400 per year. The salary range is commensurate with FMI’s compensation practice and considers factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, external market conditions, criticality of role, and internal equity. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for FMI benefits.
